SUMMARY:Future of Smart Automation – HPE’s Academic Visit to Peking University under the “Ten Thousand People Plan”
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) at The Education University of Hong Kong was honored to be invited by the Department of PE at Peking University to participate in a seven-day academic visit to Peking University from 26 October to 1 November 2025 which was supported by the “Ten Thousand People Plan” (萬人計劃) under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The visit was led by Prof. Amy HA\, Dr. Gary CHOW\, Dr. Claudia WONG and Dr. ZHENG Chen\, with 20 students actively engaged in the trip. \n\n\n\nRepresentatives from HPE and Department of PE\, Peking University\n\n\n\nAn opening ceremony was held on the morning of 27 October to officially inaugurate the academic visit. \n\n\n\n\nRepresentatives from HPE and Department of PE\, Peking University\n\n\n\n\nOver the last week\, HPE representatives participated in various activities organized by Peking University\, including observing the training of high-level athletic teams and engaging in in-depth exchanges with experts to share valuable insights and experiences. \n\n\n\nHPE representatives observed the training of Basketball Team\, Peking University\n\n\n\nHPE representatives observed the training of Football Team\, Peking University\n\n\n\nHPE representatives participated in the lesson for adventure training\n\n\n\nA key highlight was HPE’s participation in the “第十屆北大人文體育高層論壇—智動未來：AI時代的人文體育精神”\, hosted by the Department of PE\, Peking University. During the forum\, Prof. HA delivered a keynote speech alongside several distinguished experts from Chinese Mainland universities\, and engaged in a roundtable discussion on “高水平運動員人才培養模式新探索”. During the subsequent sub-forum sessions\, three HPE staff members\, Dr. Gary CHOW\, Dr. Claudia WONG and Dr. ZHENG CHEN\, as well as two PhD students\, Mr KONG Yu Hin and Ms Jaclyn TSANG\, presented their research on the topic “AI賦能：運動與身心健康促進”\, receiving recognition from peers. \n\n\n\nProf. Amy HA\, Head of Department\, HPE delivered a keynote speech (Photo: Peking University)\n\n\n\nThis visit not only strengthened the academic connections in the field of sports between universities of Hong Kong and Chinese Mainland\, but also provided a solid foundation for future collaboration in research development. SUMMARY:Student Field Experience: Visit to the Hong Kong Sports Institute
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Louie Hung-tak Lobo\, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Health and Physical Education\, led a group of 40 students on 12 November in an invaluable visit to the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI)\, Hong Kong’s flagship elite training facility. This excursion was designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and world-class sporting practice\, offering a rare glimpse into the ecosystem that produces world champions. \n\n\n\nOur students observed the cutting-edge application of sports science\, from biomechanics labs\, sports nutrition kitchen and physiological testing to advanced recovery facilities. They engaged with professional coaches and sports scientists\, gaining first-hand insight into periodization planning\, technique analysis\, and the holistic athlete development model. Witnessing elite athletes in dedicated training provided students a powerful and real-time case study on peak performance\, talent management\, and the psychological resilience required at the highest level. This visit was a profound inspiration\, moving beyond textbook learning to showcase the tangible career pathways in sports science\, coaching\, and high-performance management. It underscored the critical role of a scientific and supportive infrastructure in athletic excellence\, leaving the students with a renewed passion for their potential future professions.

SUMMARY:Seminar on Major Sports Event: Organisation of a Major International Sports Event in Hong Kong
DESCRIPTION:To further support EdUHK runners in their preparation for the upcoming Hong Kong Marathon 2026\, the Department of Health and Physical Education is set to host a series of activities including workshops and seminar on marathon in November. Distinguished speakers will share practical tips on the training recovery and mental preparation for distance running and the organisation of major sports events. \n\n\n\nThe inaugural seminar on “Organisation of a Major International Sports Event in Hong Kong” was successfully held on 17 November 2025 at EdUHK. \n\n\n\nThe event featured Mr Kwan Kee\, Chairman of the Hong Kong\, China Association of Athletics Affiliates\, as the guest speaker. In this insightful talk\, Mr Kwan shared his extensive expertise in organising large-scale international sports events. DESCRIPTION:The HPE Learning and Teaching Seminar 2025/26\, “Health Education and Promotion: Train the Trainer Program in Cambodia “\, was successfully conducted on 18 Nov 2025. \n\n\n\nDr. OR Pui Lai\, Peggy shared the fruitful outcomes of the “Train the Trainer Program”\, which aimed to transfer protocol\, assessment skills and teaching materials for hand hygiene and infection control to undergraduate nursing students of Cambodia\, so that these trainers could in turn educate secondary school pupils on such issues. \n\n\n\nThe project team led by Peggy adopted not only face-to-face teaching mode for the program but also technology for delivering online sessions\, and extended the “Train the trainer” practice to physical education lessons with the participation of students of Bachelor of Education (Honours) (Physical Education) programme. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Peggy Or shared her valuable experience of “Train the Trainer” program with the staff and students at the University.

DESCRIPTION:Further to the inaugural seminar on the organisation of large-scale sports event held on 17 November\, the Department of Health and Physical Education is pleased to offer a subsequent workshop on 19 November titled “Beyond Physical Training: Managing the Mental Marathon Before\, During\, and After Race Day” to support runners in their preparation for the 2026 Hong Kong Marathon\, focusing not only on physical training but also on mental resilience and emotional well-being. \n\n\n\nThe workshop\, led by Dr. WONG Ming Yu\, Claudia\, Assistant Professor of the Department\, attracted numerous runners and sports enthusiasts. Dr. Claudia WONG shared practical psychological strategies on building confidence and managing anxiety before the race\, and adopting a proper mindset after the race to maintain motivation. SUMMARY:Honorary Professor Shen Jinkang Visits the Department and Delivers Lecture on Sports Coaching
DESCRIPTION:On November 25\, 2025\, the Department of Health and Physical Education was honored to have had Professor Shen Jinkang (沈金康)\, Honorary Professor of The Education University of Hong Kong and former Head Coach of the Hong Kong Cycling Team\, to visit the Department and deliver a guest lecture to students of the Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management programme. Before the lecture\, Prof. Shen met with Head of Department Prof. HA Sau Ching\, Amy\, Associate Professor Dr. SUN Fenghua and Lecturer Mr. SIU Ka Man\, and exchanged ideas with the Department’s research and teaching team on topics such as elite athlete development\, training monitoring\, and performance assessment. The discussion also explored the latest applications and future development of sports science in coach education and high-performance training. \n\n\n\nThe lecture\, titled “The Application of Sports Science in Elite Athlete Training”\, integrated both theoretical perspectives and practical insights\, offering students valuable professional knowledge. Drawing upon his extensive coaching experience and decades of field-based expertise\, Prof. Shen provided an in-depth analysis of several key issues closely related to high-performance athlete development\, including: \n\n\n\n\nThe current issues and future development of competitive sports management in China\n\n\n\nHow sports science can be applied in daily training to enhance athlete performance\, illustrated with practical examples\n\n\n\nTrends in competitive sports development observed from the National Games\n\n\n\nProfessional recommendations for coaches and sports practitioners\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe lecture received enthusiastic responses from the students\, who commented that Prof. Shen’s insights were both highly comprehensible and relevant\, bridging theory and practice and offering them significant guidance in academic pursuit and future career development. SUMMARY:Department of Health and Physical Education Unites for the Hong Kong Marathon Promoting Sports Development and Advancing Physical and Health Education
DESCRIPTION:In support of the Hong Kong Marathon\, the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) at The Education University of Hong Kong organised and participated in a wide range of marathon-related activities before and after the race. Through professional outreach and active involvement in the race\, the Department showcased its expertise and strong community spirit in advancing physical education\, health education and sport science. On 15 and 17 January\, Professor Ha Sau-ching Amy\, Chair Professor of Physical Education and Sports Science and Head of the Department\, and Dr Louie Hung-tak Lobo\, Senior Lecturer\, were invited by the marathon organiser to deliver thematic seminars on sports for the public and runners. DESCRIPTION:The Nissin Foods Scholarship Presentation Ceremony 2025/26 was held on 27 January 2026 to award scholarships to elite athlete-students from the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) who strive for excellence in their studies while continuing to excel in their sporting performance. The scholarship will cover full yearly tuition fees of the recipients\, allowing them to focus on their studies without worrying about financial burden. For the fourth consecutive year\, Nissin Foods (Hong Kong) Charity Fund (“Charity Fund”) continued its support to the outstanding students enrolled in the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) Programme (BHE)\, Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching [BSc(SPSC)] Programme\, or the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Programme (Major in PE) at EdUHK. The four new scholarship awardees in the 2025/26 academic year are MOK Pak Fan Logan (triathlon) and WONG Pak Yiu Anson (triathlon)\, Year 1 students of BSc(SPSC); HO Kin Yiu Yoyo (volleyball) and YAN Nuo Norah (shuttlecock)\, Year 1 students of PGDE-PE. The three awardees receiving renewed scholarship are CHEN Pak Hong\, Jaden (rowing)\, LAU Joseph (cycling) and CHOI Kwan Lok (cycling\, retired) from BHE. Prof. CHAN Che Hin\, Chetwyn\, Vice President (Research and Development) of EdUHK\, sincerely thanked the Nissin Foods Charity Fund for its generous support to the University. He also praised the outstanding achievements of the students. SUMMARY:Department Hosted Tea Reception to Connect with Internship and Field Experience Partners
DESCRIPTION:On 6 February 2026\, the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) hosted a Tea Reception to foster meaningful collaborations and knowledge exchange between the Department and valued partners in internship and Field Experience. The event provided an excellent platform for all parties to share insights and collectively explore innovative approaches for nurturing the next generation of educational professionals. More than 50 principals and teachers from local primary and secondary schools\, along with representatives from internship partner organizations\, enthusiastically discussed strategies to provide high-quality internships and experiential experiences to students. With active participation of the partners\, valuable insights and tips were shared with students\, aiming to cultivate caring students and future educators with outstanding professional qualities\, thereby contributing to the sustainable development of Hong Kong and the international community. The Department is also honored to have two long-standing partners\, member of Sha Tin District Council and graduates of Bachelor of Health Education (Honours)\, Mr. Yeung Ying Hon\, and awardee of the Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence (Physical Education Key Learning Area)\, Mr. Lai Ho Ki\, to share their unique experiences on internships. HPE members engaged actively in discussions\, exchanging ideas and providing updates on various research initiatives that align with the University’s strategic goals. The VP(RD) provided guidance on departmental research performance and identified areas for growth with HPE colleagues. DESCRIPTION:The Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) is pleased to announce the Performance Analysts Transforming Horizons (PATH Academy) as part of The Education University of Hong Kong’s Honours College\, which was officially launched by the University on 31 March 2026. The PATH Academy reflects the Department’s ongoing efforts to support practice-oriented learning. Through collaboration with professional sports organisations\, the Academy brings together sports science\, performance analysis\, and internship experiences\, helping students develop knowledge and skills relevant to football and rugby within a broader global context.The Academy is jointly developed by HPE\, the Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR)\, and the Football Association of Hong Kong\, China (HKFA). This collaboration supports students by linking formal academic learning with exposure to real-world sporting environments. Representatives from partner organisations joined the event\, including Mr. Jamie Farndale (General Manager of Club Development and Sustainability\, HKCR)\, Mr. Andy Yuen (Performance Analyst\, HKCR)\, and Mr. Chris Yiu (Grassroots Manager\, HKFA). Their participation reflected the shared commitment between academia and professional bodies in supporting student development through the PATH Academy. Students enrolled in the Academy will benefit from professional support and guidance. SUMMARY:HPE Deepens Global Connection through Academic Exchange in Singapore
DESCRIPTION:A delegation led by Prof. Amy HA\, Head of the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE)\, visited the Nanyang Technological University (NTU)\, the National University of Singapore (NUS)\, and several distinguished institutions in Singapore for an academic exchange from 27 to 29 April 2026.  \n\n\n\nDelegation members included Dr. SUN Fenghua\, Dr. Carman LEUNG\, Dr. JIANG Shan\, Dr. Johan NG\, Dr. Claudia WONG and Dr. ZHENG Chen\, who were sincerely received by our Singaporean collaborators. \n\n\n\nA warm welcome from Dr. KEE Ying Hwa Adrian\, Head of the Physical Education and Sports Science Department (PESS)\, together with Deputy Head Dr. Swarup MUKHERJEE\, as well as Dr. KONG Pui Wah Veni and Dr. TEO Wei-Peng marked the beginning of our exchange on April 27. The HPE team received a comprehensive tour of the National Institute of Education (NIE) campus\, followed by a fruitful discussion on ideas related to academic programmes exchange and cutting-edge research initiatives. The discussion focused on public health and physical activity promotion. The visit provided a closer look at how PE & CCA are integrated into a holistic education framework\, cultivating students’ exercise habits\, teamwork\, and capabilities for diversified development. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe team was given a comprehensive tour of Hwa Chong Institution\n\n\n\n(HPE team with Wushu team\, Hwa Chong Institution）\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe academic exchange concluded with a visit to the Singapore Wushu Dragon & Lion Dance Federation\, where the HPE team observed a training session of the Singapore Wushu National Team. The visit highlighted excellence in elite athlete preparation and the preservation of cultural sporting traditions. The experience also resonated with EdUHK’s commitment to supporting elite athletes. As an elite athlete-friendly university in Hong Kong\, EdUHK offers holistic and tailored support that enables elite athletes to pursue a sustainable dual-career pathway. The team was inspired by the visit and encouraged by the prospect of enhancing long-term development opportunities and support for athletes.  \n\n\n\nThe visit strengthened academic and professional ties between HPE and leading universities and institutes in Singapore. It also broadened the Department’s understanding of diverse approaches to physical education\, public health\, and athletic training. We look forward to fostering closer collaboration and building sustainable partnerships with esteemed partners in Singapore.

SUMMARY:Hosting Professor Melody Ding: A Week of International Exchange at HPE
DESCRIPTION:From 5 to 7 May\, the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) was delighted to host Professor Melody Ding from the University of Sydney. As a Professor of Public Health and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Physical Activity and Health\, Professor Ding brought a wealth of expertise to our department\, helping us further our goal of building stronger international research ties. \n\n\n\nThe visit kicked off with Professor Ding joining our Departmental Research and Development Committee (DRDC) meeting. It was a productive session where our committee members could talk directly with her about our current initiatives. Having her international perspective was incredibly helpful as we look for new ways to shape the department’s research direction. Professor Ding led two engaging sessions that challenged us to look at our work from new angles: \n\n\n\n\n5 May: “It is more than what you think: why Physical Activity Promotion Needs Rebranding”\n\n\n\n6 May: “Active Research vs Inactive Population: Navigating Physical Activity Research in a Complex World”\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRather than just presenting data\, Professor Ding shared her own reflections on her journey as a researcher. These candid insights gave our staff and students a more personal look at the challenges of public health and inspired us to think creatively about tackling physical inactivity. \n\n\n\nOutside of the lecture hall\, Professor Ding spent time with our team during executive luncheons\, where the conversation continued in a more relaxed setting. The visit wrapped up on 7 May with a focused consultation session. Our academic staff discuss multi-disciplinary research\, collaborations etc. with Professor Ding. \n\n\n\nWe are grateful to Professor Ding for such a rewarding visit and look forward to the collaborations that will grow from this visit. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Melody Ding (4th from the right) joined the DRDC meeting to exchange experience with members. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Melody Ding delivered 2 seminars for HPE and EdUHK Staff on 5 May and 6 May respectively

SUMMARY:HPE’s 4-week Exchange Programme to East China Normal University
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) was honoured to partner with the College of Physical Education and Health at East China Normal University to organise a four-week exchange programme from 17 May to 14 June 2026. The exchange programme was led by Prof. Amy HA\, Mr. Roy CHAN and Dr. Claudia WONG\, with 18 HPE students embarking on the journey. \n\n\n\nA warm welcome from Ms. HUANG Lanlan (Party Secretary)\, Prof. WANG Xiaozan (Dean) and their colleagues from the College of Physical Education and Health marked the beginning of the exchange programme on 18 May.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRepresentatives from HPE and College of PE and Health\, East China Normal University\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the opening ceremony\, Prof. Amy HA said she really looked forward to the exchange programme and introduced the distinctive features and talent development approach of the HPE department. She encouraged HPE students to broaden their horizons\, strengthen mutual understanding\, and build lasting friendships through the exchange programme.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Amy HA\, Head of Department\, HPE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the last week\, HPE students participated in various activities organized by East China Normal University\, enabling them to gain deeper understanding of the traditional Chinese culture and the development of physical education in the Chinese Mainland.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the coming weeks\, HPE students will participate in a wide range of activities\, including lectures\, workshops\, local visits and other practical sessions\, to gain further insights into the East China Normal University. Through these experiences\, students will further broaden their academic and cultural perspectives\, and learn from diverse approaches to sports education and health development.We hope that HPE students will not only develop precious memories\, but also gain professional insights throughout the four weeks. We look forward to fostering closer collaboration and deepening our partnership with the College of Physical Education\, East China Normal University.
