DESCRIPTION:Hong Kong’s women’s table tennis team has won the historic BRONZE medal at team event in Olympic Games. Professor Stephen Cheung Yan Leung\, President of EdUHK\, had a dialogue with the two Elite Athlete-students of EdUHK- Doo Hoi Kem and Lee Ho Ching for congratulating their outstanding performance via Zoom on 6 August 2021. Doo and Lee are studying Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) at EdUHK\, while Doo is one of the awardees of President’s Commendation Scheme (Sports) in 2020/21. President Professor Cheung was following the Olympic games closely and he kept cheering up for the EdUHK Olympians via live TV broadcast and phone message to them.  President Professor Stephen Cheung Yan-leung commended\, “Doo and Lee\, together with their teammate Minnie\, demonstrated their strong mentality and spirit during the matches. With their perseverance and resilience\, they remained strong in managing their studies and sports career. SUMMARY:EdUHK promotes dual career pathways for athlete students
DESCRIPTION:Local dailies reported on the awards to the HK team\, including the HK$300 million Booster Fund jointly set up by the government and the HKJC for the enhancement of HK athletes’ abilities. In response to media enquiries\, EdUHK said it provides full supports to elite athletes\, citing special study arrangement covering distance learning and flexible study schedule. DESCRIPTION:In 2020/21\, sports competitions had been suspended for a long period. In the beginning of the pandemic\, USFHK adopted alternative arrangements for competitions at tertiary level yet it was still a tough and challenging year due to the widespread outbreak of COVID-19. The EdUHK Annual Prize Presentation Day was also forced to be cancelled this year to prevent the spread of infectious disease. SUMMARY:Building a Safety Net for Helping Elite Athletes to Repick a “Dual Path Development Life”
DESCRIPTION:In a contributed article to Ming Pao\, Professor Stephen Chiu Wing-kai\, Chair Professor of Sociology\, Dr Gary Chow Chi-ching\, Assistant Professor of Department of Health and Physical Education and Ms Samantha Liu Siu-man\, Elite Athlete Development Officer cited the study by a Canadian scholar Jean Côte’ to discuss the three main paths for athletes to choose between training and study\, and made four proposals for universities to provide assistances to elite athletes in their academic and career developments. \nThey cited the initiatives taken by the EdUHK (formerly The Hong Kong Institute of Education) as examples that since cyclists Mr Wong Kam-po and Mr Marco Kwok Ho-ting admitted to the Bachelor of Health Education (Honours) programme and from 2010\, totally more than 90 elite athletes have been admitted to the EdUHK through various channels. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here to read the article
