SUMMARY:Light Up Teaching: HPE Students Integrate Technology in Physical Education
DESCRIPTION:BEd(PE) students from the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) designed a series of innovative activities utilizing reaction light systems\, which they presented at the EDB Professional Development Program (PDP) to over 150 in-service physical education teachers on 19 and 30 January 2024. \nThe students emphasized the integration of STEAM principles in physical education\, demonstrating how reaction lights can enhance fitness games and training. They highlighted key benefits such as increased engagement\, improved reaction training\, and the promotion of friendly competition and teamwork among students. This initiative enhances the effectiveness of physical education through the incorporation of information technology and STEAM education. By using modern tools\, HPE students are preparing themselves for future teaching roles while contributing to the evolution of PE practices that resonate with today’s tech-savvy learners. \nFeedback from attending PE teachers has been overwhelmingly positive\, with many expressing enthusiasm for the innovative approaches presented. Educators noted the potential of reaction lights to make physical education more engaging and relevant for students. By embracing technology and STEAM\, HPE students are not only enhancing their own educational experiences but also setting a precedent for future educators to incorporate innovative practices in their teaching. This initiative fosters a culture of creativity and adaptability\, essential skills for both teachers and students in a rapidly changing educational landscape.

SUMMARY:Sitting Light Volleyball and Its Functional Sports Garment Wins Bronze Medal at Geneva’s Invention Expo
DESCRIPTION:Sitting Light Volleyball and Its Functional Sports Garment\n \n\nThe effort and innovation of our department is recognised in the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva\, one of the world’s most important events exclusively dedicated to inventions with participants from more than 42 countries and regions. HPE is delighted that the invention “Sitting Light Volleyball and Its Functional Sports Garment” has won the bronze medal at the expo.  This invention is led by the principal investigator Dr. LEUNG Ka Man\, Carman\, co-investigator Ms. CHAN Ka Man\, Carmen\, and fashion designer Miss Arto Wong.  Sitting light volleyball is a new adapted physical activity that helps to promote the physical and mental health of people with physical disabilities. Throughout the research and experiments\, the team identified the risks and limitations of this sport. This garment is thus invented to remove the limitations and movement restrictions that come with such sports. The invention will help and encourage further engagement in this sport by people with physical disabilities. Apart from gaining international recognition\, a patent application was filed in Hong Kong and Mainland China as well.

SUMMARY:Dr. Leung Ka-man Receives the President’s Award in Knowledge Transfer
DESCRIPTION:Third from the right: Dr Leung Ka Man\n \n\nThe President’s Awards for Outstanding Performance in Teaching\, Research\, Knowledge Transfer and Administrative Services 2022/23 recognise and honour staff members for their contributions and achievements. The Department of Health & Physical Education is delighted that Dr. LEUNG Ka Man\, Carman\, Assistant Professor\, has received Individual Award in Knowledge Transfer in the university by translating University-owned knowledge and expertise into economics or social improvements that benefit the community as a whole.  Dr. Leung joined the university three years ago and has been actively applying her research projects in knowledge transfer in the community. Her projects include an intervention study and promotion on light volleyball among 3\,500 older adults in Hong Kong and mainland China (supported by the Research Impact Fund\, HK$7.4million) through train-the-trainer workshops\, light volleyball classes with teaching aids\, and light volleyball competitions.  Dr. Leung has also gone further in the Sitting Light Volleyball (SLVB) innovation\, a newly adapted physical activity\, which has successfully reached and benefited people with physical disabilities. To prevent para-athletes’ injury while playing sports in a seated position\, Dr. Leung and her team invented “A Garment for Sports or Activities”\, which a patent application was filed in Hong Kong and Mainland China\, in 2022 and 2023 respectively. This garment can provide para-athletes with a safe sports apparel option for everyday use.

SUMMARY:Sitting Light Volleyball Booth to Promote Inclusion at Hong Kong Paralympic Day 2023
DESCRIPTION:Hong Kong Paralympic Day 2023 was held on 23 July\, 2023\, organised by the Hong Kong Paralympic Committee. It was an event full of various para sports trials\, performances and sharing sessions by athletes. Our department was very delighted to be part of it and to host the booth of sitting light volleyball in order to promote this sport. Since 2015\, Dr. Leung Ka Man and her team have been working on sitting light volleyball related research. At first\, the team focused on how light volleyball could improve the wellbeing of older adults\, later on they tried to adapt light volleyball to fit the needs of people with physical disabilities. Sitting light volleyball was then invented in 2018. The team has been working on the research and promotion of this new sport ever since. Apart from organising competitions\, being part of the Paralympic Day is also a valuable opportunity to reach out to more people.  The team designed a game to promote sitting light volleyball in an interactive way. Participants had the chance to strike the light volleyball and answer questions. The booth was really popular and successful. We believe that it is a good way to promote not only this sport but also social inclusion.\n \n\n \n\n
