SUMMARY:[FLASS Dean's Research Fund Seminar] Fluid Intake and/or Brief Mindfulness-based Intervention
DESCRIPTION: \nDr. SUN Fenghua\, Bob\, Associate Professor of the HPE Department\, delivered an online research seminar on “Fluid Intake and/or Brief Mindfulness-based Intervention: Possible strategies on improving cognitive function of college soccer players” on 8 March 2023. The seminar attracted around 20 colleagues and students to attend and exchange ideas. The project was funded by FLASS Dean’s Research Fund.  Abstract of the seminar:Intermittent team sports such as soccer require two consecutive periods of play split by a half-time break. The half-time break provides players an opportunity to refuel and recover for the second half. Refueling and rehydration with fluid during the half- time break are important as it may affect the second-half performance. Additionally\, mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) as a psychological treatment is adopted in the sports field\, but its effect during the half-time break on the second-half performance has not been explored. Therefore\, it is necessary to explore the optimal recovery strategy during the half-time break. This presentation explained the accurate effect of fluid intake and/or a brief MBI on athletes’ cognitive function and physiological responses after a 45-min simulated soccer protocol.

SUMMARY:Disney Open House for Dream Makers for PES1274 Sport Management and Development of BSc(SPSC)
DESCRIPTION: \nOn 2 Feb 2023\, 29 students from Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Science and Coaching programme attended Disney Open House for Dream Makers as part of the course “PES1274 Sport Management and Development”. The event was the first in-park Career Development and Job Recruitment Expo at Hong Kong Disneyland. It was a valuable opportunity for our students to learn about the operation and management of the resort as well as their possible diverse career choices. Students attended 3 leaders’ sharing sessions hosted by the management of Disneyland Resort. A wide range of themes were covered including “Future Development of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort”\, “Disney Heritage: The Legacy of Storytelling”\, “Sneak Peek of World of Frozen” and “Cast First ― Sharing on Talent Acquisition\, Compensation & Benefits”. As our students are prepared for a wide range of careers including prospects in the sports and recreation sector\, it was such an insightful and fruitful experience for them to meet with leaders of one of the biggest recreational and commercial companies in Hong Kong. They have learnt about the vision and beliefs of Disneyland “Imagineering” across the globe. The sharing on the talent acquisition was also very informative and helpful as students got to learn about what it is like to work at Disneyland as well as its human resource management. Students are thankful for this opportunity and are looking forward to meaningful encounters in the future already!\n \n\n

SUMMARY:Dr Carman LEUNG Announces Research Findings of study “physical fitness level of people using wheelchair in Hong Kong”
DESCRIPTION:Supported by Hong Kong Disneyland and in cooperation with Hong Kong Federation of Handicapped Youth (HKFHY)\, Dr. LEUNG Ka Man\, Carman\, Assistant Professor of HPE\, has announced the findings of the physical fitness and physical activity level of Hong Kong people using wheelchair in a press conference on 14 January 2023. As the first research endeavor specifically for the population with physical disabilities in Hong Kong\, Dr Leung and her research team revealed that wheelchair users have showed poor flexibility and body composition indices. Further\, most participants were satisfied with their quality of life and would like to participate in outdoor activities and voluntary works. Based on the study’s results\, Dr Leung and her research team suggested that an extensive investigation of physical fitness and physical activity level among people with all types of physical disabilities in Hong Kong should be conducted\, especially those “hidden” wheelchair users. More resources should be invested to promote wheelchair users’ physical and mental health.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here for more details

SUMMARY:[EOCP Project] Tutorials on Classroom Management and Pedagogy: Online PE
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 and its ripple effects cause a permanent impact on learning and teaching environment in local schools. Due to the temporary suspension of face-to-face classes\, shifting to online or blended classes swiftly as circumstances require will become a new normal. The EdUHK developed a platform named EdUHK Online Classes Platform (EOCP) in May 2020 to share readily usable teaching and learning videos with local schools to cater the immediate needs for in-service teachers. Later on\, the platform extended its feature to include webinars and workshops which fostered exchange of insights in learning and teaching under the New Normal; as well as an online teaching experience scheme through which pre-service teachers at EdUHK served in local schools to support curricular and co-curricular activities online. Three NEW EOCP videos have been uploaded to the EdUHK Online Classes Platform (EOCP). These videos were organised by Dr. CHOW Chi Ching\, Gary with support from the graduate\, Ms Lam Yuen Sum [2017-22 BEd(PE)\, recently PE teacher at Fukien Secondary School]. Mr Ho Yik Kiu Kenneth\, Miss Chu Hoi Ying\, and Mr Tam Chi Chung shared their teaching on using online resources to teach PE under the new normal.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPE teacher from a secondary school – Mr. Tam was invited to talk about the difficulties and solutions on online teaching in PE subject under the pandemic. To solve privacy and teaching limitation in online classes\, physical fitness self-learning platform was developed for students to browse different exercise videos demonstrated by teachers\, so as to complete the exercise at home according to their ability and environmental limitation. Meanwhile\, the online platform could record video views and students’ progress to encourage them to build up exercise habits. By the application of online tools\, data can be collected and analyzed through the app\, students could review their exercise records in order to raise their awareness of their body changes. Besides\, teachers can prepare topics that students may be interested in during online classes\, such as food nutrients\, healthy weight reduction methods\, etc. Online tools – Edpuzzle and Quizizz were mentioned to be one of the interactive methods to communicate with students through the online lessons\, students were also recommended to hand in their exercise videos to achieve their goals. Finally\, the speaker believes that there would be more online platforms to assist teachers in the future\, so as to maintain good teaching quality in the online teaching era.\nVideo link\n\n\n\n\n\nPE teacher from a primary school – Miss. Chu was invited to talk about her view on online teaching in PE. The speaker elaborates on her experience with teaching PE lessons in real-time practice and self-learning through online tools. For instance\, finding alternatives of sports equipment at home\, watching teaching videos prepared by teachers\, and completing sports exercises through google classroom. To increase students’ motivation\, rewards schemes and online competitions with school teachers are organized to encourage students to participate. In terms of safety\, the degree of sport technique was adjusted\, and parents were invited to exercise together with students. Finally\, the speaker talks about her views on online and real-time PE teaching\, and also demonstrate one of the alternatives for students that can be used at home for practicing.\nVideo link\n\n\n\n\n\nPE teacher from a primary school – Mr. Ho was invited to talk about his view on applying IT in teaching PE. The speaker listed some of the online tools for recording data and preparation of teaching materials for students. By video shooting different PE topics from teachers and recording students’ performance by online equipment\, teachers can review students’ progress and ability to adjust their teaching content. Moreover\, to increase learning motivation\, teachers design interesting PE activities and are involved in video shooting for demonstration\, which could enhance students’ interactions and interest to participate in the lesson. Furthermore\, in terms of tackling the safety issues of exercising at home\, the speaker explained how they collaborate with parents on monitoring and arranging safety environment for students to take PE lessons at home to prevent any danger\, such as the area needed for exercise\, and alternatives of the sports equipment. In addition\, video classwork for students was also applied to provide chances for them to use video-making tools and online platforms to demonstrate their work\, as well as to self-learn and provide feedback for their peers.\nVideo link

SUMMARY:Media Interview of Dr Louisa Chung Ming-yan\, Assistant Professor at the Department of Health and Physical Education - Electronic
DESCRIPTION:HKIEd had developed an electronic diary which allowed students to upload images of their food and details of exercise to a web-based system via their smart phones and camera. The data is then analyzed by dieticians who provide feedback on energy and nutrient analysis for self-reflection. The leading researcher Dr. CHUNG Ming Yan\, Louisa\, Assistant Professor at the Department of Health and Physical Education\, said the aim of the e-diary was to transfer nutrition knowledge to the user so that with practice they could modify their own behaviour. She said educators could arrange more outdoor activities\, allocating more time for PE lessons and motivating children to join sports team whereas parents could help their children establish exercise habits. More details about the e-diaries could be found in the newspaper clip below:*Newspaper clip
