Programme registration for the September 2025 intake will be performed through ONLINE in August. New students are NOT required to undergo programme registration in person. Hong Kong Future Talents Scholarship Scheme for Advanced Studies

The Master of Social Sciences in Therapeutic Play and Well-Being [MSocSc(TPWB)] is one of the EdUHK taught postgraduate programmes supported under the FTSS by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in 2025/26. Eligible local students may qualify to receive tuition subsidies for up to HK$100,000 for the MSocSc(TPWB) programme.

Programme Introduction

MSocSc(SCM) targets students who plan to pursue careers related to sports coaching and management. As a postgraduate programme, applicants are required to have basic knowledge in sports-related subjects or demonstrate outstanding performance at least in one sport before their admission.

Programme Features

MSocSc(SCM) will provide students with advanced knowledge and practical experiences in sports coaching and management to address the urgent community needs of improving personal health by providing trained professionals. It will cover various essential elements, ranging from sports technology, performance analysis, trends and development, basic skills in writing funding proposal, and marketing strategies in sports industry. Graduates are expected to pursue a coaching or management career in different sports populations varying from community clients to professional athletes.

Programme Aims And Objectives

The programme aims to:


  1. promote a comprehensive understanding of sports coaching and management;
  2. enhance competence in coaching and management through various elements ranging from sports performance analysis to marketing strategies in sports industry; and
  3. develop leadership in sports coaching and/or management industry.

On successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:


  1. demonstrate the mastery and application of coaching and management ability in sports industry;
  2. synergize scientific and evidence-based strategies for sports coaching and management;
  3. develop leadership in planning and implementing coaching programme and/or policy in sports industry.
Programme Structure

The programme comprises 24-credit-points (cps) with 3 core courses (9 cps).

All students need to take 3 core courses (9 cps). Students should further take either 5 elective courses (15 cps), or 3 elective course (9 cps) plus a Master’s thesis (6 cps), to add up to 24 cps for graduation.

Programme Curriculum

The 3 core courses provide students with knowledge and skills related to sports coaching and management. To strengthen students’ knowledge in different domains, a pool of 8 electives are provided for students to select for completing the programme.


For students who choose to work on the Master’s thesis, they will be assigned with a supervisor who will guide them through a sports coaching and management-related research project.

The medium of instruction is English.

Teaching Venue

Classes in the same or different semester(s) may be scheduled on weekday daytime/evenings, weekends and/or during long holidays at the Tai Po Campus / Tseung Kwan O Study Centre / North Point Study Centre / Kowloon Tong Satellite Study Centre and/or other locations as decided by the University. 

Tuition Fee

This programme is offered on a self-funded basis. The tuition fee for the whole Programme is HK$175,920 (2026 cohort), which is provisional and subject to adjustment. Tuition fees paid are normally not refundable or transferable.

Entrance Requirements
  1. Applicant should normally hold a recognized Bachelor’s degree in sports or a closely related subject; or local elite athletes or Regional/National elite athletes with a recognized Bachelor’s degree or other equivalent qualifications; and

  2. Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution in a non-English speaking system should normally fulfil one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements (Note):
    • Overall score of IELTS 6.0 (academic version)#; or
    • TOEFL (internet-based test)#:
Score of 80 (for tests taken before 21 January 2026)
Score of 4.0 (for test taken from 21 January 2026 onwards); or
    • Band 6 in the College English Test (CET)# with a total score of 430; or
    • Grade C or above in GCSE / GCE OL  English; or
    • Other equivalent qualifications.


# The test should be taken in test centres and the result should be valid within two years
(i.e., for the 2026/27 intake, the test must be obtained on or after 1 Jan 2024).
TOEFL Home Editions, TOEFL MyBest Score, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online, IELTS One Skill Retake, Duolingo and National Postgraduate Entrance Examination (全國碩士研究生招生考試) are NOT acceptable.

Note: Regional/National elite athletes who do not meet the English Language Requirements of the University:

  • may be considered on an individual basis based on the interview performance, subject to a limited quota; and if selected,
  • will be required to successfully complete an additional English enhancement course offered by the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) of the University during the study period on a self-financing basis in order to meet the graduation requirements.

Interview Arrangement

Eligible applicants will normally receive the interview invitation (via email) within a month after applicatin submission. It will be an individual Zoom interview to be conducted in English.

Application Result

The application result will normally be released to successful applicants within a month after the interview. Applicants who do not receive any updates from our Registry may deem your applications unsuccessful.

  •  Students who have fulfilled the programme requirements will be conferred the degree upon the approval of the University’s Academic Board. The University bears no responsibility for the evaluation of its degrees outside of Hong Kong. Students are advised to consult with the relevant authority(ies) for the prevailing rules/regulations.
  • Individuals who would seek qualification certification in Chinese Mainland after graduation should contact the Chinese Service Centre for Scholarly Exchange (CSCSE) 中國(教育部) 留學服務中心 (https://www.cscse.edu.cn) for updated details.
  • The certification in Chinese Mainland is an independent process from the conferral of academic qualification in Hong Kong by the University. For the avoidance of doubt, no warranties are given in respect of individual graduate’s qualification certification or recognition in Chinese Mainland or any other professional qualification or license outside Hong Kong.
  • CSCSE  takes a very prudent approach in evaluating each application, including the students’ residential period in Hong Kong during the entire study period. When evaluating graduates’ credentials, the full border entry and exit records of individual applicants will be examined.
  • Students who would pursue credential recognition should be aware that short stays in Hong Kong during the study period may not fulfil the CSCSE residential requirements, leading to possible uncertainty and risks to their credential recognition.
  • Students are seriously advised to consider the above when making personal plans, such as accommodation and travel plans from Hong Kong, etc. and make necessary arrangements where appropriate.
  • It is the responsibility of the students to be familiar with and comply with the University regulations and guidelines governing the Taught Postgraduate Programmes.
