The Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) successfully organized the Water Safety Promotion Programme in Rural Areas of the Greater Bay Area in May 2024. Co-organized with the Hong Kong Swimming Teachers’ Association (HKSTA) and the Orphan Education Society Guangdong (OESG), the programme included three 5-day workshops in Xinyi City and Qianguancun. About 30 HPE students acted as the main or assistant swimming coach to teach more than 300 teenagers.Teaching content covered essential water safety knowledge, drowning prevention strategies, swimming techniques (breathing, floating, propulsion), and basic rescue skills. The programme aimed to address the lack of swimming and water safety education in rural areas, while helping HPE students apply their knowledge to benefit the community.

Mr. CHAN Ching Yat, Roy, the supervisor of the programme, highlighted the importance of bridging the gap between theoretical education and practical application. He noted that the programme not only enhanced students’ teaching experience but also deepened their understanding of cultural diversity and responsibility towards their country.
