“Online Consultation Cabinet” Helps SEN students to Face the Pandemic
Mar 16, 2022 All day

The COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted the daily lives of school children and made it more difficult for students with special educational needs (SEN) to adapt. Mr Roy Chan, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Health and Physical Education, EdUHK, worried that the pandemic affects SEN students’ emotional health, so at the end of February, he established the “Online Consultation Cabinet” to provide emotional support for SEN students. More than 100 primary and secondary school students and their families have benefited so far.
Inspired by remote medical consultation, Mr Chan and his students conducted one-on-one interviews with SEN students through “Observation, Auscultation, Interrogation and Action” (modified from Observation, Auscultation, Interrogation and Palpation in Chinese medicine) to understand their physical and mental condition. He shared useful information about the pandemic and taught them home exercise and mindfulness activities.
The one-on-one interviews can help to gain deeper understanding of the difficulties that SEN families encountered during the pandemic and provide adequate support. In case of serious emotional distress cases, they can also be referred for follow-up.
