Capacity Building for SEL Thought Sport in Hong Kong

Dr. CHOW Chi Ching, Gary (PI)

Capacity building for Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) addresses a pressing need for evidence-based emotional support in Hong Kong schools, where students face high academic pressure and distress. Leveraging recent Education Bureau (EDB) policy changes, this three-year project (2026–2028) repositions physical education (PE) as a key vehicle for SEL using a culturally adapted, Play-based approach grounded in the CASEL and TPSR frameworks. Phase 1 validates localized SEL assessment tools through a case-control study, while Phase 2 evaluates a progressive five-level teacher training program across local primary schools using a quasi-experimental design. By systematically assessing implementation fidelity (TARE 2.0) and tracking teacher self-efficacy and student outcomes longitudinally, the project delivers a scalable, practice-ready model to enhance long-term student well-being in Hong Kong.
