The 27th International Table Tennis Federation Asian Table Tennis Championships 2024 took place from October 6 to 13 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Two EdUHK elite-athlete students, Doo Hoi Kem (Bachelor of Health Education (Honours)) and Lee Ho Ching (Master of Social Sciences in Sports Coaching and Management), alongside Zhu Chengzhu and Ng Wing Lam, to represent Team Hong Kong, China to compete in the women’s team event of the championship. On the third day of competition, they defeated Thailand 3-0 in the quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals. They then faced the Chinese national team in the semifinals, where Hong Kong lost 0-3 to the team led by world No. 1 Sun Yingsha. With no bronze medal match, Team Hong Kong, China secured the bronze medal, marking their third consecutive top-three finish at the Asian Championships.

The competition progressed to the individual events, where Doo Hoi Kem made history for the Hong Kong team in the women’s singles category. After victory over Chinese Taipei’s LI Yu-Jhun in the quarterfinals, she went on to defeat South Korean star Shin Yu-bin in the semifinals, securing her place in the women’s singles for the first time in her career. She won the bronze medal and becoming the first Hong Kong representative to win the women’s singles title at the Asian Championships after 19 years, creating history for the Hong Kong team!
