Department of Health and Physical Education Unites for the Hong Kong Marathon Promoting Sports Development and Advancing Physical and Health Education
January 15 January 18
In support of the Hong Kong Marathon, the Department of Health and Physical Education (HPE) at The Education University of Hong Kong organised and participated in a wide range of marathon-related activities before and after the race. Through professional outreach and active involvement in the race, the Department showcased its expertise and strong community spirit in advancing physical education, health education and sport science.
On 15 and 17 January, Professor Ha Sau-ching Amy, Chair Professor of Physical Education and Sports Science and Head of the Department, and Dr Louie Hung-tak Lobo, Senior Lecturer, were invited by the marathon organiser to deliver thematic seminars on sports for the public and runners. The sessions, well received by the audience, focused on parent-child physical activity and post-race recovery, highlighting how sports education can strengthen family relationships and how evidence-based recovery strategies can help long-distance runners maintain performance and well-being.

At the Hong Kong Marathon held on 18 January, more than 50 students, staff members, elite athletes and alumni from the Department participated in the race, highlighting the Department’s dedication to active living and community engagement. Professor Ha and Dr Louie were also present at the University’s meeting booth to cheer on the runners and offer encouragement and support.

The Department of Health and Physical Education is committed to promoting holistic health and sustainable practices as core elements of its teaching, research and professional practice. In the lead-up to the marathon, the Department organised a series of preparatory activities, including workshops covering long-distance training, psychological preparation and sports nutrition. The workshops also featured a guest sharing by Mr Kwan Kee, Chairman of the Hong Kong, China Athletics Association, entitled “Organisation of a Major International Sports Event in Hong Kong”, in which he provided insights into the planning and execution of large-scale international sporting events.
From pre-race professional engagement to full participation on race day, these initiatives reflect the Department’s strong commitment to physical and health education, as well as the close-knit relationship between its students, staff and alumni.
